ProfileCharter Books is a bookstore whose mission is to cultivate community and a robust local culture through a broad selection of books, programming, and the free exchange of ideas. Based in Newport, RI, the shop’s name refers to the story of independent ideas and human rights in America..which is incomplete without Rhode Island’s Royal Charter of 1663. Lakuna Design was retained to provide their visual identity design. References to 17th century typography and the handmade quality of American Colonial typesetting were employed to complement the store concept and its historic setting in downtown Newport, RI.
Lakuna Design developed branding for some of our favorite local businesses, so when we needed a visual identity that represented our indie bookstore with a uniquely Newport blend of classic and hip, they were our first choice. I appreciated the comprehensive research they conducted into other bookstores’ marketing as well as their brilliant incorporation of design elements from the 17th-century Royal Charter into our visual identity. The results speak for themselves!
